Running it
The ESAB Cutmaster 40 is a compact, portable plasma cutting system built for professionals and serious DIY fabricators who need clean, precise cuts on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Delivering up to 40 amps of cutting power, this unit handles material thicknesses suited for automotive repair, metal fabrication, maintenance work, and light industrial applications. Its inverter-based design keeps the unit lightweight and energy-efficient compared to older transformer-based plasma cutters, making it easy to transport between job sites while still providing dependable arc performance. The system runs on standard single-phase input power, giving shops and mobile technicians flexibility without requiring specialized electrical setups. At the heart of the Cutmaster 40 is ESAB's proven torch technology, engineered to produce a stable, focused plasma arc that minimizes dross and slag buildup on cut edges. The torch consumables are designed for quick-change convenience, reducing downtime during production runs, and the drag-cutting capability allows users to cut directly against the workpiece without needing to maintain a precise standoff distance, which speeds up workflow and improves ease of use for less experienced operators. The unit also includes robust safety features such as pilot arc technology, which reignites the arc automatically when cutting over expanded metal, mesh, or painted and rusted surfaces, ensuring consistent cut quality even on less-than-ideal materials. Built with ESAB's reputation for rugged construction, the Cutmaster 40 features a durable outer shell designed to withstand the rigors of shop floors and field environments, along with thermal overload protection to prevent damage during extended use. The package typically includes a torch, ground clamp, and all necessary cables to get users cutting right out of the box, making it a practical choice for those upgrading from oxy-fuel cutting or entry-level plasma systems. With its blend of portability, cutting performance, and consumable economy, the ESAB Cutmaster 40 stands as a reliable workhorse plasma cutter for shops that demand precision cutting without the bulk or expense of higher-amperage industrial systems.
The ESAB Cutmaster 40 is a solid choice for hobbyists, fabricators, and light industrial users needing a dependable, portable plasma cutter. Its Sequencer technology delivers clean, consistent cuts, and the compact design makes it easy to move around a shop or job site. While the duty cycle and consumable costs are worth considering, the overall build quality and cut performance make it a strong value in the 40A class.

Been using this for auto body work and it slices through 1/4 inch steel like butter. Arc starts are reliable and I haven't had any misfires yet.
The cut quality is fantastic and it's light enough to carry up a ladder. My only gripe is the tips and electrodes cost more than I expected.
Been running this for about a year in my fabrication shop. Handles daily use well, though I do let it cool down between longer cutting sessions.
Cuts through rusty old farm equipment without issue. Portable enough to take out to the field with a generator. Very happy with this purchase.
Works great once dialed in, but you really need a good air dryer setup. Had some inconsistent cuts until I upgraded my air filtration.
